Keep These 7 Clog-Causers Out of Your Drains

Clogs are one of the most common plumbing problems most people encounter. After all, drain pipes are only so wide, and it’s easy to overestimate just how much they can handle. Allowing clogs to build up cold become quite the problem, and a bathroom or kitchen plumber may be needed.

The good news is that avoiding clogs can be quite simple. The main thing is to keep “clog-causers” like the items below out of your drains.

1. Grease and Cooking Fat

Grease has a nasty habit of solidifying down in your drain pipes. As it congeals, it coats your pipes’ walls and starts to form stubborn clogs with other substances trying to pass through your pipes. The grease that makes it out of your home to the municipal sewer can cause problems there as well, such as the “fatbergs” that are creating huge financial burdens on cities here and overseas.

2. Coffee Grounds

We love our coffee here in Seattle, but our plumbing systems could definitely stand to go decaf. Coffee grounds may seem to go down your garbage disposal just fine, but those tiny granules have a knack for sticking inside the components and clogging your drain lines.

Eco-Friendly Tip: Instead of pouring used coffee grounds down the drain or into the trash, sprinkle them over your indoor or outdoor plants to fertilize them.

3. “Flushable” Wipes

Is a “flushable” wipe truly flushable? Short answer: no. Even though flushable wipes and other wet wipes might seem similar to toilet paper and harmless enough to flush, they’re made to hold their shape when wet for a long time, whereas toilet paper is made to break down quickly. See the difference for yourself in this video!

4. Paper Towels

Paper towels are highly absorbent and are made of sturdier material than toilet paper. These qualities make them much harder to flush and much more likely to cause a clog.

Eco-Friendly Tip: Rather than using paper towels, which cause problems for recycling plants, try products that you can reuse, like textile cloths or Swedish dishcloths.

5. Hair

Hair–we’ve all got it, and we all lose it, and the one place you definitely don’t want it to go is your drainage system. Along with grease, hair is one of the top clog-causers because of how it mats and catches other items in your drain pipes. Make sure your sinks, tubs, and showers are equipped with drain guards that are easy to clean, like the stainless steel TubShroom.

6. Floss

Floss seems harmless enough, but it causes a lot more clogs than you think because of the way it tangles. By all means, continue to floss, but save yourself a visit from a plumber by throwing your used floss in your bathroom wastebasket.

7. Bath Bomb “Shrapnel”

There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to a foamy, fragrant bath bomb at the end of a long day. That being said, the flower petals, herbs, and decorations that float to the water’s surface can contribute to clogs down the road. When you’re done soaking, quickly replace your tub’s plug with a drain guard to keep any stray pieces from the bath bomb out of your home’s plumbing.

Think you might have a clog forming?

If you hear a gurgle coming from below your sink, shower, or tub, or if water drains slowly from these areas, there could be a clog-in-the-making in one or more of your drain pipes. A bad smell coming from the drain is another typical sign. If you suspect you have a clog, you can count on the eco-friendly plumbers at Green Planet Plumbing & Sewer, LLC to get to the root of the problem. I have used green planet a few times. One time was an emergency clog, They were prompt and reasonably priced. Their most recent visit was planned work that was needed on my older home. They were honest and fair, did quality work, answered all my questions, explained my options and gave me sound advice. Green planet is who I call whenever I have a plumbing need. They have always done right by me

Justin rocks. He is incredibly knowledgeable and professional. Keeps it clean and courteous. As a contractor, I have had him and the green planet team rough in and trim out multiple jobs and even work on my own home. Couldn’t recommend a better plumber.

I am SO relieved to have found Green Planet, a plumber I can trust. For years, I had a colleague in my business networking group who did amazing work without bait and switch and ridiculous markup, but he retired. Green Planet came recommended by my next door neighbor. They first did routine maintenance on my rental unit, but this week I called them with a bit of urgency. My water shut off valve snapped off, thankfully when I was not in an emergency, like a burst water pipe. I decided to have them also fix a toilet that on occasion would run for hours and an exterior spigot that was shooting water the wrong direction. Technician arrived within 45 minutes, took a look at everything, and provided a written estimate. He discussed what could go wrong once we removed drywall and fixtures, but made every effort to work diligently to avoid these scenarios. One of the main issues would be the presence of old, corroded, pipes versus modern pex. He had the spigot and toilet fixed quickly and then focused on the main project. Steady lines on the drywall removal help make it easy for me to replace that. Once done, even with a quick parts run to the warehouse, he was wrapped in about 90 minutes with everything looking great. We discussed my aging hot water heater, and options to install an upgraded toilet, so I can make plans to budget those projects down the road. Such a relief to have a company I can trust after some bad experiences with the big brands you see on TV (I see how those types of companies can afford big splashy campaigns).

We had a really great experience with Eddie from Green Planet. We had a shower faucet that was leaking, and also the handle had completely separated from the faucet. Green Planet doesn’t change for an estimate which was really appreciated, and also their estimate to replace the cartridge in the faucet was less than half what other companies had charged us for the same service. We were weighing whether to replace the entire faucet, and he gave us helpful thoughts on that as well. We chose to go with a cartridge replacement because to replace the faucet they would have had to open up a wall. We didn’t have a dry waller in mind. The repair was fast and works great. Thanks so much Green Planet!

It was a pleasure to have Justin and Henry replace our hot water tank and snake out our kitchen sink drain. They were very pleasant and easy to talk to and made sure all questions and concerns were answered. Very rapid response, I called for an estimate and they were here the next day. I approved the work and they were able to start the work the following day. They arrived early and got right to work. They protected all exposed surfaces before starting. When complete they made certain that we understood how to operate the controls on the tank and explained all they did. All at a reasonable cost. We definitely will call Green Planet Plumbing again for any future plumbing needs.
